Treatment Methods for Male Infertility

Male infertility is considered when pregnancy does not occur despite at least one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. The problem may stem from disorders in sperm count, motility, shape or the sperm production/transport mechanism. Today, a large part of male infertility can be managed with accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Treatment is planned entirely according to the underlying cause, and there is no single standard method.

Lifestyle Adjustments

In mild sperm disorders, the first-line treatment is lifestyle changes:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Weight control
  • Regular exercise
  • Establishing a sleep routine
  • Avoiding exposure to excessive heat (sauna, hot baths)

These changes can positively affect sperm quality within 2 to 3 months.

Medication Treatment

It is used in hormonal or infection-related infertility:

Hormone Treatments

  • Hormone support in cases of low testosterone
  • FSH / LH regulating treatments

Infection Treatment

  • Antibiotic treatment (in conditions such as prostatitis and epididymitis)

Antioxidant Treatments

  • Vitamin C, vitamin E
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Zinc and selenium supplements

Varicocele Treatment

Varicocele is one of the most common correctable causes of male infertility.

Treatment:

  • Microsurgical varicocelectomy

Effects:

  • An increase in sperm count
  • Improvement in motility
  • An increase in the chance of pregnancy

Surgical Treatments

Surgery is needed in some anatomical problems:

  • Sperm duct obstruction surgeries
  • Epididymis or vas deferens repairs
  • Undescended testis surgery (in the early period)

Assisted Reproductive Techniques (IVF)

It is applied if sperm quality is low or natural pregnancy is not possible:

IUI (Insemination)

  • Used in mild sperm disorders

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

  • Fertilization of the egg in the laboratory

ICSI (Microinjection)

  • Fertilization of the egg with a single sperm
  • The most effective method in severe male infertility

Sperm Retrieval Methods

If there is no sperm at all (azoospermia), surgical methods are used:

Micro-TESE

  • Searching for sperm in the testicle under a microscope

TESE / TESA

  • Retrieval of sperm from testicular tissue

This sperm can be used in IVF.

Hormonal and Genetic Treatment Approaches

  • Treatment of hypogonadism
  • Guidance after genetic evaluation
  • Personalized treatments in some special syndromes

Psychological Support

Male infertility can create not only physical but also psychological effects:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Performance pressure
  • Relationship problems

If necessary, psychological support is added to the treatment process.

Factors Affecting Treatment Success in Male Infertility

  • Age
  • Duration of infertility
  • Sperm parameters
  • Presence of varicocele
  • Hormone levels
  • Genetic factors

How Long Does Treatment Take?

  • Lifestyle changes: 2 to 3 months
  • Medication treatments: 3 to 6 months
  • Recovery after surgery: a few weeks
  • IVF process: 1 to 2 months

Summary

Male infertility is a condition that is not due to a single cause and can be treated with many different methods. Today, thanks to medication treatments, surgical methods and assisted reproductive techniques, many couples are able to have children. Success is directly related to making an accurate diagnosis and creating a personalized treatment plan.
