Circumcision

Prof. Dr. Abdulmuttalip Şimşek

Circumcision

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin (foreskin) that covers the tip of the penis. It can be performed for both religious and medical reasons. Today, thanks to modern surgical techniques, the procedure is carried out safely, comfortably and with fast recovery.

From a medical standpoint, circumcision offers important advantages in terms of maintaining hygiene, reducing the risk of infection and preventing certain diseases.

Medical Benefits

  • A reduction in the risk of urinary tract infection
  • Prevention of penile infections
  • Easier maintenance of hygiene
  • A protective effect against some sexually transmitted diseases
  • A reduction in the risk of penile cancer

⏰ When Should It Be Done?

  • Newborn period (the first weeks) → fast recovery and low complication risk
  • After the age of 6 → should be planned taking psychological effects into account

The most ideal timing should be determined specifically for the child and the family.

Methods Used

Surgical Circumcision (Gold Standard)

  • Performed under sterile operating room conditions
  • Provides an aesthetic and controlled result
  • The risk of bleeding and complications is low

Energy-Assisted Techniques

  • Bleeding control with cautery or modern devices
  • A shorter procedure time
  • A more comfortable recovery process

Why Is Surgery at the Forefront?

  • A controlled procedure without damaging the tissue
  • Aesthetically more successful results
  • Minimization of the risk of complications

Circumcision performed by an experienced surgeon makes a clear difference in terms of both safety and aesthetics.

What Should Be Considered?

  • It should be performed in a sterile environment
  • It should be carried out by an experienced physician
  • Appropriate anesthesia should be preferred
  • Post-procedure care should be done correctly
