TUR-P

Prof. Dr. Abdulmuttalip Şimşek

TUR-P

TUR-P is the gold standard endoscopic surgical method in which prostate tissue is removed with the help of a resectoscope, entered through the urinary channel, in order to relieve urinary obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The inner part of the prostate that narrows the urinary channel is cleared in a controlled way, urine flow is relieved, and bladder outlet obstruction is eliminated.

Main Purpose

  • To relieve urinary obstruction
  • To improve bladder emptying
  • To reduce nighttime and frequent urination
  • To increase quality of life

In Which Situations Is It Applied?

1. Advanced prostate enlargement

  • Significant difficulty in urinating
  • Weak urine stream

2. Urinary retention

  • Inability to urinate
  • Catheter dependence

3. BPH with complications

  • Recurrent urinary tract infection
  • Bladder stones
  • Effect on kidney function

How Is TUR-P Performed?

  • The urinary channel is entered with a resectoscope
  • The inner prostate tissue is viewed with the camera
  • The excess tissue is broken up and removed with an electric current (loop)
  • The channel opening into the bladder is widened

Advantages

1. No need for open surgery

  • It is performed without making an incision

2. High success rate

  • Provides significant improvement in symptoms

⏳ 3. Effective in the long term

  • Provides permanent improvement in urine flow

4. Fast relief

  • Symptoms decrease in a short time in most patients

Possible Risks and Side Effects

  • Temporary burning during urination
  • Bleeding
  • Risk of infection
  • Retrograde ejaculation (backflow of semen)
  • Rarely, urinary incontinence

The Post-Operative Process

  • Usually 1
to 3 days of hospital monitoring
  • Temporary catheter use
  • Plenty of fluid intake is recommended
  • Full recovery within a few weeks

Frequently Asked Questions

It provides long-lasting and permanent relief in most patients, but prostate enlargement can recur over time.

Erectile function is usually preserved, but the most common situation is the backflow of semen.

A return to daily activities is possible on average within 2 to 4 weeks.

Clinical Summary

TUR-P is the most effective and most frequently used endoscopic surgical method in the treatment of urinary obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Without the need for open surgery, the obstructing tissue of the prostate is removed and urine flow is permanently improved.
