Hypospadias (Prophet’s Circumcision)

Hypospadias (Prophet's Circumcision)

Hypospadias, popularly known as the prophet’s circumcision, is a congenital urological anomaly seen in boys. In this condition the urinary opening (urethral meatus) is located not at the tip of the penis, but on the underside of the penis, sometimes in the area near the scrotum. Hypospadias is not merely an aesthetic condition; it is an important health problem that can affect urination and, in later years, sexual function.

When treated with the correct surgical approach at an early stage, hypospadias is a condition in which very satisfying results can be achieved.

What Is Hypospadias?

Normally the urinary opening is located at the tip of the penis. In hypospadias, however:

  • The urinary opening is located on the underside of the penis

  • The penis may curve downward (chordee)

  • The foreskin is usually excessive on the upper side and deficient on the lower side

For this reason it is popularly called the “prophet’s circumcision.”

How Is Hypospadias Treated?

The only effective treatment method for hypospadias is surgery. The aim of surgical treatment is not only to move the urinary opening to the correct location, but also to restore the penis to a functionally and aesthetically normal state.

The goals of hypospadias surgery are:

  • Moving the urinary opening to the tip of the penis

  • Correcting the curvature of the penis

  • Creating a healthy and functional urinary channel

  • Achieving an aesthetically normal appearance

Timing of the Surgery

Hypospadias surgery is generally:

  • Performed during childhood between 6 months to 18 months of age

  • Carried out in a single session or, in some cases, in stages.

Surgery performed at an early age positively affects both the healing process and the functional outcomes.

Surgical Approach and Techniques

Hypospadias surgery is a field that requires advanced experience and microsurgical skill. The surgical plan is determined according to the type of hypospadias, the location of the urinary opening and any accompanying curvature.

The techniques used:

  • Reconstruction of the urethra

  • Use of tissue grafts when necessary

  • Correction of penile curvature

  • Achieving a natural and symmetrical appearance

A personalized surgical plan is made for each patient.

The Post-Operative Process

  • Short-term catheter use after surgery

  • Regular dressing changes and check-ups

  • Close monitoring of urinary function

The vast majority of children return to their daily lives within a short time.

Why Is Specialist Evaluation Important?

Hypospadias surgery:

  • Must be performed correctly in the first operation

  • Inexperienced interventions can lead to additional problems in later years

  • Functional and aesthetic results are important in the long term

For this reason, treatment should be planned by urology specialists experienced in hypospadias.

Our Approach to Treatment

Our approach in the treatment of hypospadias is to determine the most appropriate surgical method by taking into account the child’s anatomical structure, growth process and future functions.

The entire process is:

  • In accordance with scientific guidelines

  • Carried out with current surgical techniques

  • Conducted with family information and patient safety kept at the forefront.
